Lo Keys

Mikhail Stukov: When did your love for music begin?

Lo Keys: I think my love for music began like most people. I was just a kid walking down the hallways in my high school listening to music like everyone else. Mind you this was when Hip-Hop was really taking off. This is when DMX, Jay Z, Ja Rule, 50 Cent, and State Property were really killing the game.  My first love was really art. Things like painting and drawing were how I used to express my creativity. Now instead of painting and drawing I use the beat as my canvas and the words as my paintbrush to give people great product.

Mikhail Stukov: Why the name Lo Keys ?

Lo Keys: The name Lo Keys is actually derived from Low Key. People used to call me Low Key all the time in my high school days. I think mainly because I was quiet and hard to get up with in most instances. The majority of the time I was really focused on my music trying to perfect that to get where I am today. Later on I would drop the “W” and add the “S” just to give it some flavor because a lot of people already had the name Low Key so I wanted to keep my name core but also switch it up to be different.

Mikhail Stukov: When it comes to your lyrics, what motivates/inspires you?

Lo Keys: I’m always inspired by other rappers. I love to press play on music and it inspires me to want to go to the studio. I am also inspired by old school R&B music and certain artist like Andy Warhol, Basquiat, and Van Gogh. I think the era of old school R&B was timeless based of the simple fact that the artist had so many emotions invested into the music. When people invest that much into their music I think that should inspire anyone.

Mikhail Stukov: What do you consider your biggest accomplishment?

Lo Keys: My biggest accomplishment is staying the course. A lot of people get down on themselves when things don’t go exactly as planned. I’m sure most artist think they are going to make a song and be on MTV tomorrow but it does not work like that. I have a great career with all the support that I have received from the blogs, DJs, and fans but not everything has happened as fast as I would have liked it too but instead of quitting when things don’t go right I just go harder to put myself into a good situation.

Mikhail Stukov: The key to success?

Lo Keys: I have a quote for you when you speak of the term success. (Laughs) Always remember that “Hard work beats talent, When Talent does not work hard”. That quote has truly been my key to success. Grind when nobody else wants to. Stay up and work hard when you’re tired.  If you don’t work, you don’t eat!

Mikhail Stukov: How do you spend your free time?

Lo Keys: Most of my free time is spent either in the gym or with my family. I grind so much I don’t get to see them that often so it’s cool when we get to hang out and shoot the shit. I enjoy my fam and friends to the fullest. They are good people so taking the time to spend with them is priceless cause you don’t get it all the time. I also check out different movies if I hear that something was good and I enjoy going out from time to time.

Mikhail Stukov: What’s one artist you would want to work with and why ?

Lo Keys: Well I always say that one of the tracks on my debut album would be a track featuring Slick Rick and Kanye West that would be produced by Pete Rock. It’s going to be a storytelling song because they are my two favorite storytelling artist and if you mix them in with the legendary Pete Rock you will only get a classic record out of that. Hopefully sometime in the near future we can put that together and make history.

Mikhail Stukov: What are your future long-term goals in life?

Lo Keys: My goals are to make it to the next level and to be able to provide a good life for the people I love. If I can accomplish that task everything else is pretty much just an extra in my life. I’m cool with that though. I think we are all here for a reason you just have to find your purpose. I found mine and we are accomplishing goals now but when I make it to that next level that’s going to be my main long-term accomplishment.
