A staple of the independent music scene, Fat Beats is celebrating a monumental occasion this summer with two must-see shows commemorating their 25th anniversary. The concerts will take place in the brand’s shared hometowns of New York City and Los Angeles and are set to feature several career artists whose beginnings and subsequent success have been nurtured by Fat Beats.
It’s been a helluva ride for Fat Beats, which has evolved and thrived in a rapidly changing music industry by keeping pace and staying ahead of the curve. After closing their NYC and LA retail stores in 2010, everything shifted for the brand once synonymous with underground hip-hop. Though still representing for the culture, Fat Beats began to put on artists beyond the world of rap through their savvy distribution channels and online store.
“While the Fat Beats brand is synonymous with underground hip-hop, there’s always been a link between the culture that Fat Beats represents in name, and a broader range of genres from soul, funk, world, jazz and everything in between,” explains Joe Dent, Fat Beats’ General Manager.
From acts such as Daron Malakian (of System Of A Down) to Little Dragon and labels like Mango Hill and Ropadope, Fat Beats has become the home for acclaimed music of any genre. And for the heads still craving ground-breaking hip-hop, they have their incredible Baker’s Dozen series featuring the likes of Exile, Dibia$e and Ras G, in addition to a notable catalog of full length releases from Black Milk, Roc Marciano, ILL BILL, Clear Soul Forces, Marco Polo & Masta Ace, and Your Old Droog, to name a few.
All of this momentum has led to the announcement of two concerts—Sunday, July 14th at Sony Hall in NYC and Saturday, August 10th at The Regent in DTLA. The New York show’s lineup is bursting with living underground rap legends including Vinnie Paz (with Esoteric), Non Phixion, Bahamadia, and The Last Emperor, among others. In LA, concert-goers will be treated to sets from Dilated Peoples, Tha Alkaholiks, Blu & Exile, LA Breakers, Cut Chemist, Nu-Mark, House Shoes and DJ Eclipse.
Fat Beats is also hosting a contest to give away five pairs of tickets to each show, and entering for your chance to win couldn’t be easier. All you have to do is follow their 25th Anniversary Playlist on Spotify, which includes standout tracks that they’ve released over the years, along with music from all of the artists set to perform at each show. Winners will be contacted via email at least one week prior to each show, good luck!
Here’s to another 25 years!
