So Deni Rosa, tell us a little about yourself, where your from?

I’m a singer-songwriter from the South. Durham, NC where I was raised Pensacola, FL where I was born. My mother is Black, my father is Panamanian and I grew up with my mom and two sisters of which I am the oldest. I’ve been singing ever since I could basically but really started out in my grandmothers church.

When did you first become interested in music?  What prompted you to make a career out of R&B?

I really can’t remember a time that I was not interested in music. My mom wanted to be a singer and I grew up in a church family that was pretty musically inclined as well so it was the environment I was born into. I was pretty much born humming and it grew from there. I was also always kind of a little business minded as a kid too and knew this was what I wanted to do with my life and what I wanted to be the spring board for other things because I also knew I wanted to build more from the music as well like Jordan and Magic did with basketball or like Mary Kate and Ashley. I tried some other things out when I was younger like ice skating and a few other things I like and was good at but I just knew it was music or nothing so I wrote this letter to my mom, I had to be like 8, basically saying all these other things are cool but I want to sing more than anything else and here is what I need to make it happen.

When it comes to your lyrics, what inspires you?

I’m inspired a lot by life stories. Music is kind of cinematic for me. I can hear a song and take a walk through that part of my life like Im watching a movie and it kind of works the same way when I’m writing a song. I might hear something that someone has gone through or something that I have recently experienced and it may inspire me to write about it. When I write a song I usually know how I want the video to go, the show to go etc because I saw the movie in my head while I was writing.

What do you look for in beats you’re selecting?

I look for it to move me. Make me sit up in my chair a little bit. A lot of times I have the song written already or a general way I want it to go and I’m just looking for the right production. I really I enjoy getting in the studio and building organically, sharing ideas, and building the song together. I feel like I leave a better artist each time and I find those tracks to also be the favorites amongst fans.

What’s one artist you would want to work with and why?

Oh I have a whole list of people I would drop everything to work with but if It would be a dream to work with Missy Elliott. I mean she’s a GOAT. Missy really brings the best out of an RnB Singer. She understands how to make that explosive hit and still maintain the soul of the track. She taps into all the dimensions of the artists vocal ability while making it relatable for the average listener and always delivers the swag and creativity. She also represents what I believe, in that you can’t put Missy Elliott in a box.

Where exactly do you see yourself at 5 years down the road?

I see myself touring my sophomore album, launching my athletic brand, and my television series.

What are your thoughts on how things are going in the music industry right now?

I can understand why a lot of people feel the way they do about the music industry right now. A lot of people feel like the level quality and creativity has declined and that music just isn’t the same anymore. A lot of people miss RnB and feel like trap music has taken over but I feel like its all about cycles. There’s always a dominating genre of music for any given time period and right now thats trap, in the 70’s it was disco you know and at the end of the day what the people want to hear is what is going to get played in the main stream and if that is what is out there then there is an audience big enough out there saying “this is what I want to hear.” I think the real problem that people have is when that is the ONLY thing you hear. I think people are just looking for the opportunity and it feels like there are none if you are not apart of that sound. But I also think the tide is changing. I think were moving into a period of social enlightenment where people are essentially “waking up” and since we know music reflects the times we already see it moving into the mainstream. I also think that people have so many options now that you really can find and listen to whatever kind of music you want and there is an audience for everything and there is actually a lot of real quality music out there. You got Marc E Bassy doing some good stuff, Kehlani, BJ the Chicago kid, Bas, J Cole, Kendrick etc and I think we sometimes forget to give credit to those still creating great music.

Any new projects coming out soon ? & what can we expect from this projects?

I just released “Like That” a 5 track EP really about being feminine and unapologetic about it. Saying I am who I am is it like that? Yeah its like that and don’t be ad cause they “like that.” Women face a lot of pressure to be the “ideal woman” or to fit somebody’s image of what is right and pure and they are slandered if they don’t fit that role and I just think we have a long way to go int he way we look at and treat women in America, especially black women in America. Like the Curry’s. I love that they can be looked at as a role model for black love and a positive symbol for marriage but Ayesha has also been turned into this new “bar” women are supposed to live up to. I think its beautiful who she is and what she does and stands for but now it’s like oh I need me a Ayesha Curry as if not being who she is makes you undesirable. So I just want to empower women that you don’t have to fit some mold laid out for you and that you being you doesn’t make you less or more than the next person. The next project will be called "Sincerely Deni” to follow "Like That” and it is going to be all about LOVE. Loving yourself, loving people, loving your man etc. I think a lot of people misconstrue a woman speaking up for women as “bitter” and want to show that just because you love yourself first does’t mean your cold. Also I realize we don’t sing about love anymore. We sing about how we have been burned or want to avoid love but the one thing we all want and need is love.
